Push Back Against the World - Elder Oaks

posted Mar 01, 2017 17:37:33 by RyanAllen
Loved this FB post from Elder Dallin H. Oaks:

Late last week I was pleased to attend the commencement ceremonies at BYU–Hawaii. As is traditional on such occasions, I gave some advice to graduates. I titled my message “Push Back Against the World.” By pushing against “the world” I obviously do not mean all that the world has to offer in modern conveniences, prosperity, and security. When I say, “Push back against the world,” I mean push back against that part of the world’s values and practices that draw us away from the Lord’s teachings and our covenant obligations.

These are challenging times, filled with big worries: wars and rumors of wars, possible epidemics of infectious diseases, droughts, floods, and global warming. But as serious as all of this is, we must worry just as much about the rising tide of evil in the world around us. Though some of us may feel isolated from the physical and political threats I have just mentioned, all of us are surrounded with evil in literature, music, movies, videos—on the internet, in our schools, and in the marketplace.

We cannot change the evil influences that surround and press upon us and our families, but we can increase our power to deal with them as we push back against the world. We must try to carve out personal islands of purity and serenity and strengthen our barriers against the forces that besiege us in these protected spaces.

The Lord has warned us again and again, directly and through His servants, that the world will hate us for being different, for doing things the Lord’s way. The good news is that when we do the Lord’s work in the Lord’s way we are assured of His blessings to help us. “I will go before your face,” He has said. “I will be on your right hand and on your left, and my Spirit shall be in your hearts, and mine angels round about you, to bear you up” (D&C 84:88).

The new Disney movie for Beauty and the Beast is coming out this month. Disney is proud to announce that it will have its first explicit gay scene in it. They want to show the world that the gay lifestyle is normal and natural in every way. Just another example for why we need to push back against the world!!

JulieK, I love his reference to personal islands as it definitely goes to your excellent thread about God's secret place!

@loryk... aren't we the most blessed people on earth to have these individuals guiding us with Priesthood keys?

Agree JulieK!... this was speaking to me - as I've recently begun to find my own personal island to study each morning like I never have before.

@David.clark... saw that as well and it was a major "uh oh" in my mind. There's no stopping this train now. Eventually, we'll be whittling our entertainment options down to ZERO. I'm almost there now.

Love this. I am so grateful for guidance and the power that comes from following our leaders. I cannot even imagine moving through the future of our world without their guidance in our lives!
