Help request for RS Lesson on Price of Priesthood Power

posted Mar 08, 2017 23:10:05 by HeatherHerrmann
I have been asked to teach an upcoming lesson in Relief Society in the tiny branch where I am attending church in Minnesota, where I’m helping my son with my granddaughters. I’ve been asked to teach on President Nelson’s April 2016 Conference Talk: Price of Priesthood Power. I have access to the talk online, but if any of you have any other insights that might add to this lesson I’d really appreciate them! I have so little extra time to use on preparation, I’m hoping you can give me some help! Thanks family!

For me the key was this quote (emphasis mine), "I urgently plead with each one of us to live up to our privileges as bearers of the priesthood. In a coming day, only those men who have taken their priesthood seriously, by diligently seeking to be taught by the Lord Himself, will be able to bless, guide, protect, strengthen, and heal others. Only a man who has paid the price for priesthood power will be able to bring miracles to those he loves and keep his marriage and family safe, now and throughout eternity."

This has become famous as the "In a coming day" quote. Being taught by the Lord Himself does not mean inspiration, or reading the scriptures; it means face to face. President Nelson is inviting the members of the Priesthood to climb Mount Sinai with him and see the face of the Savior, as Moses did many years ago. I believe that is the single most important invitation that has been given over the pulpit in my lifetime (I may have missed one, but I don't think so).

The second important point in this for me was this, "How else can we increase our power in the priesthood? We need to pray from our hearts. Polite recitations of past and upcoming activities, punctuated with some requests for blessings, cannot constitute the kind of communing with God that brings enduring power. Are you willing to pray to know how to pray for more power? The Lord will teach you."

What a significant thing to say. We need to pray and find out how to pray. Having a whole prayer dedicated to the topic of asking Heavenly Father to guide me in future prayers regarding priesthood power. In the past I had simply asked for more. I had never thought to pray to learn how to ask for more. That was very significant for me. I'm sure that applies to everything we undertake to learn from Heavenly Father, and could translate well to the sisters you will be teaching.

"Are you willing to worship in the temple regularly? The Lord loves to do His own teaching in His holy house. Imagine how pleased He would be if you asked Him to teach you about priesthood keys, authority, and power as you experience the ordinances of the Melchizedek Priesthood in the holy temple. Imagine the increase in priesthood power that could be yours."

Last week I started something new. The Oquirrh Mountain Temple is about 10 minutes away from where I work. I was looking for a way to increase my temple attendance. I live in Orem and am in the Provo temple district. It hit me last week that I could get up even earlier on Tuesday morning (4am) and drive to the OMT and be walking in the door before 5:30 so I could be on the 6am session. That lets me get to work at about 8:30 and will not disrupt my young family like a Friday night or Saturday morning session would do. We don't have older children or our own siblings close by who can be babysitters, so my wife and I have to go at different times.

My wife is going to drop off our 4-year-old daughter at my 74-year-old mother's house one afternoon a week for three hours while the older three boys are in grade school and she will have just enough time to get one session in at the Provo temple. This will be a huge step forward for us, and is undoubtedly going to bring a great increase in the spirit within our family. (Of course it means we will always be going up to the prayer circle with a stranger) :-)

I hope that helps you have some insights for your lesson. I look forward to hearing back from you on how it went, and what impact you feel it had on these wonderful sisters.

Listen to the podcast by Mike Stroud titled Neutralized. He refers to this talk quite a bit. Maybe it will give you more insight.

I love this talk too! So significant! He said, "Urgently" plead ... why? Because we must have this power to survive.

Thank you, Bob. Love the commentary.

Generally, general conferences are about the basics or fundamentals of the Gospel--faith, repentance, pray, read the scriptures and serve others. But, President Nelson's talk was far above the basics. He might has well said, "How to have your second comforter experience".

He was not speaking of having power in the Melchizedek order of the priesthood, but was talking about the fullness of the Melchizedek Priesthood. For example:
The Lord loves to do His own teaching in His holy house. Imagine how pleased He would be if you asked Him to teach you about priesthood keys, authority, and power as you experience the ordinances of the Melchizedek Priesthood in the holy temple.

It is Jesus who is doing the teaching here of priesthood keys and power in the priesthood associated with the temple.

Or, when he says,
Priesthood power can calm the seas and heal fractures in the earth.

If you have the power to heal or move the fractures of the earth, then you should have power to move mountains.

Does this not sound like the same priesthood that is described in JST Genesis 14?
30 For God having sworn unto Enoch and unto his seed with an oath by himself; that every one being ordained after this order and calling should have power, by faith, to break mountains, to divide the seas, to dry up waters, to turn them out of their course;

31 To put at defiance the armies of nations, to divide the earth, to break every band, to stand in the presence of God; to do all things according to his will, according to his command, subdue principalities and powers; and this by the will of the Son of God which was from before the foundation of the world.

And does this not sound like the same priesthood power that was given to Nephi during his second comforter experience?
Helaman 10:8 And thus, if ye shall say unto this temple it shall be rent in twain, it shall be done.

9 And if ye shall say unto this mountain, Be thou cast down and become smooth, it shall be done.

Back to JST Genesis 14, it tells us that the men with this priesthood power that President Nelson is encouraging us to obtain, were men that were translated:
32 And men having this faith, coming up unto this order of God, were translated and taken up into heaven.

And, this priesthood does not come by man or father and mother, but by God (or His assigned angels):
JST Genesis 14:28 It being after the order of the Son of God; which order came, not by man, nor the will of man; neither by father nor mother; neither by beginning of days nor end of years; but of God;

Now consider D&C 77:
11 Q. What are we to understand by sealing the one hundred and forty-four thousand, out of all the tribes of Israel—twelve thousand out of every tribe?A. We are to understand that those who are sealed are high priests, ordained unto the holy order of God, to administer the everlasting gospel; for they are they who are ordained out of every nation, kindred, tongue, and people, by the angels to whom is given power over the nations of the earth, to bring as many as will come to the church of the Firstborn.

The 144,000 are ordained by the angels to this holy order.

For me, President Nelson is encouraging us to be worthy of, and obtain the priesthood power that is found in the fullness of the Melchizedek Priesthood that is given to those who have their calling and election made sure and are translated beings. Or as one has said, "the tip of the spear". He testified of this to every man and boy of the priesthood--it is obtainable!

Awesome comments and teachings! Thanks everyone.

Heather, in D&C 109:22 Joseph Smith asked in the Dedicatory Prayer on the Kirkland Temple, "And we ask thee, Holy Father, that thy servants may go forth from this house armed with thy power." He doesn't exclude the woman here. Woman come out of the temple of the Lord armed with power. We as woman need to ask Heavenly Father to teach us about this power, what it entails, what it can do for us and our families, and how we can access this power in our daily lives. I believe that there is so much that Heavenly Father can teach us about the power women possess as endowed sisters, we just need to ask and have an open mind.

Another great scripture is: 1 Nephi 14:14 "I, Nephi, beheld the power of the Lamb of God, that it descended upon the saints of the church of the Lamb, and upon the covenant people of the Lord, who were scattered upon all the face of the earth; and they were armed with righteousness and with the power of God in great glory"

Nephi saw this power that is given covenant women of God today. We can be armed with righteousness and the power of God in great glory if we keep our covenants. We just need to understand what this power can do for us and how to go about using it to bless the world.

Elder Bruce R McConkie:
"This doctrine, this doctrine of the priesthood 'unknown in the world and but little known even in the Church' cannot be learned out of the scriptures alone. It is not set forth in the sermons and teachings of the prophets and Apostles, except in small measure. The doctrine of the priesthood is known only by personal revelation. It comes, line upon line and precept upon precept, by the power of the Holy Ghost to those who love and serve God with all their heart, might, mind, and strength (see D&C 98:12)" -- Ensign May 1982

In the temple endowment ceremony, there's no distinction made between male and female with regard to officiating in the priesthood or power in the priesthood.the oath and covenant of the priesthood in section 84 doesn't make any distinction either with regard to receiving.

I just watched Face to Face with President Eyring and Elder Holland - about half way through they discussed approaching the Throne of God in Prayer but they also tied it into preparing to give blessings. What I got out of it was there was power in preparing, praying and even dressing appropriately in approaching the Throne of God in giving blessings and the powerful results of the blessings because of it.

We always need to be seeking, not just when we are at need, but always. Our focus needs to be on Christ and the Father.

Liz, I loved that part! I loved how they talked about Pres. McKay preparing himself for prayer. I was struck how we need to make prayers more of a sacred experience.
