Fear...

posted Mar 12, 2017 20:32:44 by Diana Olsen
I watched the movie, "After Earth" with Will Smith and his son last week. There was a part in it about fear that really struck me and I've been pondering it. Here it is...
"Recognize your power! This will be your creation. Control yourself. FEAR is not REAL! The only place that FEAR can exist is in our thoughts of the future. It is a product of our imagination causing us to FEAR things that do not at present, and may not ever exist. That is near insanity. DANGER is real... but FEAR is a CHOICE".

I thought that was very powerful!
As I've read and listened to many things this week regarding fear and being fearless, i have recognized that when we completely put our trust in GOD, we have no reason to Fear anything!

I would love to hear your thoughts regarding fear, fearlessness and trust in God.

I'm not really a big movie watcher, but I am going to watch this one...it sounds interesting. Thanks for sharing. I have seen a few movies that say something profound, but don't remember what they were.

Diana, thank you for sharing your insights on this topic about fear. President Monson teaches that fear and faith cannot be within us at the same time. I believe that trust and faith in God are very similar.

"...as you strip yourselves from jealousies and fears, and humble yourselves before me, for ye are not sufficiently humble, the veil shall be rent and you shall see me and know that I am..." D&C 67:10

I've found it is equally as helpful for my spiritual progression, to repent of my fears as repenting of my sins, in the more typical sense.

We are bound by our fears just as much as we are bound by sin. If I'm more afraid of losing my income than I am of God's commands, I may compromise my standards in order to keep that income. If I'm more afraid of pain than I am of God's commands, I may avoid ____ fill in the blank. (an invitation to gather, repentance, going to the temple, saying something courageous that I'm told to say that may offend others, etc.)

You are so right. It is important to strip ourselves of fear! Then, we can freely heed the Spirit/God's commands, without being bound by those fears.
Love.

Well said, Claire!!👏👏👏

I've had similar thoughts about income. I finally came to realize that the faith in the Lord will overcome any uncertainty or fears about income.

Thank you Mike, David and Clair! I love and appreciate all your thoughts!
I think to overcome Fear by trusting in God is a Biggie!!
I just read Shelle's post in the Visions section about "Review of, Through the Window of life". At the very end Suzanne says, "Fear is the Killer. The Devil Loves to bring Fear. If there is Fear, there is no Faith.

I think it is absolutely essential that we are FEARLESS in facing the trials that are surely at our doorsteps.

I heard this little acronym for fear:
False
Evidence
Appearing
Real

When I think about it, that makes sense to me. Easier to overcome as well, as it has been reduced down to the truth.

Don't take counsel from your fears.

I think "fear" is intrinsically tied to "unbelief."
If we really believed the blessings and powers can be ours, how can there be fear? (I'm thinking of power of the priesthood, help from angels, guidance and comfort from the Holy Spirit/Holy Ghost and and and and....)
