What to do when you find yourself a little gloomy

posted Mar 21, 2017 19:00:35 by JulieK
"We should have before us a strong desire to do good to others. Never mind so much about ourselves. Good will come to us all right if we keep our minds outside of ourselves to a certain extent, and try to make others happier and draw them a little nearer to the Lord. … When you find yourselves a little gloomy, look around you and find somebody that is in a worse plight than yourself; go to him and find out what the trouble is, then try to remove it with the wisdom which the Lord bestows upon you; and the first thing you know, your gloom is gone, you feel light, the Spirit of the Lord is upon you, and everything seems illuminated" (Pres. Lorenzo Snow, Conference Report, Apr. 1899, 2–3).

Service is huge. A friend of mine said something today that really struck me. She said, "Christ will only have servants who are at peace." While I completely agree that we can't fully serve the Lord without having inner peace, one of the best ways to find that peace is by serving the Lord. Now, that's a paradox!

Great counsel, JulieK! I've never made myself truly feel better by showing myself love. But, I've never felt bad after sincerely showing someone else love.

It's a paradox like in the Beatitudes where Christ says (paraphrasing) that he who shall lose his life shall find, but he that shall find his life shall lose it. In my natural man mindset, it seems counterintuitive, but it's true! Thank you for the reminder!
